5 easy ways to improve your search engine ranking

Whether or not you are a ‘techie’ or not, there are still some very simple policies you can adopt to help improve your website ranking. This will not only be good for your business, but these tips all relate to what are referred to as ‘onsite’ SEO optimisation, in other words work you do directly on the visible aspect of your website.

You will doubtless be thinking to yourself that you already know a few of these requirements, but unless you keep regularly up to date with all search engine updates for SEO optimisation, then chances are you are already playing catch-up. Because of the number of websites that exist today and the number of even very small businesses which have an online presence compared to even three or four years ago, competition for those vital page 1 search result rankings has become even more critical.

So what can you do from your end to help maximise the results of offsite SEO optimisation? For the best SEO, Bristol’s LSG Creative have the following suggestions:  Get browsers to stay on your website for as long as possible. This is one of the least known facts about SEO. Google, for example, rewards websites where traffic stays there rather than moving on almost immediately. As a consequence you have to think cleverly and work out ways to get traffic to stop, even if it is just for five or ten seconds longer. Now your immediate reaction would be to create more copy for people to read, but that actually has the opposite effect – browsers hate text but love imagery, and there is your first clue. Use powerful and effective imagery to attract attention. A browser is far more likely to read what is underneath a powerful image than text placed on its own.

  1. Browsers hate text, but love videos. Videos take away all the hard work of reading pages of text and now that smartphones are the most popular way to browse the internet, copy is even harder to read. Videos however are perfect for viewing on a smartphone and a minute-long video will keep more browsers entertained than a page of text that takes a minute to read!
  2. Make sure your website is very easy to navigate and that browsers can easily find what they are looking for. Today it is all too easy to go back to search results than spend a minute scouring a website trying to see if they have what you are looking for. If browsers can’t find what they want within 10-15 seconds, chances are you have lost them.
  3. Get interactive. Engage with anyone visiting your website as quickly as you can and encourage them through the strategic use of ‘call to action’ buttons and links to navigate your site. Google loves websites where visitors take action and visit more than the Home or landing page.
  4. Less is more. Believe it or not, but a visitor to your website is more likely to stay and read content of confronted by 200 – 300 words on a page as opposed to 1,000 words.

There is as much psychology as technology that is involved in the creation of a great website that search engines will love. If you are not 100% sure you know what you are doing, then why not call us here at LSG Creative in Bristol and let us not just tell you what we can do to get results, but we will actually achieve those results too!
