Your complete checklist for SEO content before publishing

When it comes to effective search engine optimisation, you want to be sure that any article you publish is properly checked and optimised before going live. That way you get the most out of your time spent writing the post and can, after it has time to be scanned by Google bots, have the best chance of getting your site on the first page of more visitor searches. However, effective SEO is not a straightforward practice and there are hundreds of things that can affect where your article ends up, including a healthy backlink profile and effective off page SEO. However, the following list is based on industry updates and is a good place to start from before making any site live.

Use a clear and easily scannable heading structure throughout the post. This means having one h1 followed by h2 subheadings. If you are then making further points within the h2s, give those headings h3 tags. Include your focus keyword in your main h1 heading. Some even suggest that placing the keyword as close to the start of the heading as possible is even better for SEO results. Drop the focus keyword and other LSI keywords into other subheadings within the post.

Main body of text

Include your focus keyword within the first 100 words of your blog post. This helps demonstrate to Google what the most important discussion point within your article is. Include at least 5-6 LSI keywords throughout your article. These keywords are words that are closely related to the main focus keyword of the article. For an easy way to find these, type your focus phrase into google and see what “suggested searches” Google proposes at the bottom of the page. Longer content ranks higher, so the more the better. If you can aim for 2,000 words and above then this is a great target to have.

Using images throughout your post is a great way to boost SEO as it makes the content more engaging and enjoyable, as well as being easier to understand. This increases the average time users spend on the page, which gives it a healthy boost. The same goes for videos as well, and for best results include your own personally made videos. Give all images suitable alt attributes. This essentially tells Google what the image is as they can’t physically see it themselves.

It is widely encouraged to include 3-4 external links throughout your post as a means to add extra value to the reader and show that your post is interlinked and relevant within the chosen focus area. Make sure that all external links are for high authority sites, meaning you are only using good quality links. Be sure to include internal links to other useful pages of your site so visitors can visit other posts you’ve written and spend longer on your site. Of course, as mentioned at the start, there isn’t a single one-stop solution to getting your posts to all rank on the first page. Instead, you should vary and test combinations of different SEO best practices and see what leads to the best results for your business. In which case you should look to regularly update the above checklist for your own purposes and make adjustments accordingly.
